New hsv diagnosis, waking up with dried blood around my lips, is this a cold sore thing?

I was diagnosed with oral hsv a few weeks ago and lately I keep waking up with dried blood on my lips and the corners of my mouth. My lips have been really chapped and I think I might be picking or rubbing them in my sleep. Is this something other people dealt with early on, and what helped you keep your lips comfortable overnight?

Very common early on, dry cracked lips split easily while you sleep. A thick plain balm before bed and a humidifier in the room made a big difference for me.

I noticed I was licking my lips at night when they felt tight, which made the chapping worse. Staying hydrated and keeping a balm on the nightstand helped me stop the cycle.

Talk to your doctor or pharmacist about the bleeding just to be safe, they can tell you what is normal. For daily comfort I stick with a gentle spf lip balm and avoid harsh flavored products.

Founder here, thank you for opening this up. The pattern I keep coming back to is protection before anything shows: mineral SPF on the lips every morning, sleep protected, wind and cold kept off. Small daily habits move the needle far more than reacting after the fact.

Yeah, that happened to me a lot in the first few months, the scab cracks while you sleep and you wake up looking way worse than it feels. It gets so much easier once you learn your own patterns, hang in there.

Oh I remember that exact panic the first few weeks, waking up and seeing that crust on my pillow and lip and thinking something was really wrong. For me it turned out to be the sore cracking and weeping overnight while it healed, and once I stopped picking at it and kept it moisturized it got a lot less dramatic.

Yeah that happened to me a lot in the first few months, the blister cracks while you sleep and you wake up to a little crust of blood on the pillow and your lip, it's scary looking but pretty normal for the healing stage. Keeping the spot moist overnight made a big difference for me, and honestly the first outbreak is usually the worst one so hang in there.

Oh yeah, that was me in the first year too, I'd pick at it in my sleep without knowing and wake up to a little crusty mess on the pillow. It settles down a lot once you learn your triggers, I promise the first few months are the roughest part.

Yeah that was one of the first things that freaked me out too, it's usually just the scab cracking a bit while you sleep and your lips moving around, mine did the same thing. It gets way less scary once you've been through a couple of them, promise.
