Why are my cold sore outbreaks so aggressive and what actually helps prevent them?

I get cold sores way more often and more intensely than anyone I know, sometimes two fever blisters in a row before the first one has even healed. I already keep abreva on hand and I try to stay on top of chapped lips, but it feels like the smallest trigger sets one off. For those of you living with hsv1, what daily habits have made a real difference in how often you flare up?

For me the biggest change was wearing spf lip balm every single day, even in winter, because sun exposure was my main trigger and I did not realize it for years.

Sleep and stress management did more for me than anything topical. Once I stopped pulling late nights the frequency dropped a lot, and I keep lysine in my routine as part of a general wellness approach.

Pay attention to what happens right before each one shows up and write it down. I found that windburn and dry, chapped lips were almost always the start, so I keep my lips moisturized and cover up when it is cold or windy.

Mine used to flare every single ski trip until I finally started treating lips like skin and covering them before I went out, not after the tingle showed up. Sleep and not skipping meals made a bigger difference than I ever expected too, honestly.
