Any SPF lip balm that doesn't taste bitter? Sun always seems to trigger my cold sores

Every summer I end up with chapped lips after a long beach day and then feel a cold sore tingle a few days later. I know I should be wearing SPF on my lips daily for prevention, but every balm I have tried has that awful bitter sunscreen taste that lingers for hours. Does anyone have a favorite SPF lip balm that tastes fine and actually stays on? I already take lysine and try to keep my lips moisturized, the sun part is where I keep failing.

The bitter taste usually comes from zinc heavy mineral formulas, so look for one with newer chemical filters or a lightly flavored version. I keep mine clipped to my keys so I actually remember to put more on every couple of hours outside.

Honestly a wide brimmed hat helps me as much as the balm itself, shade for your face plus an SPF 30 lip balm made a big difference in how often I flare up after sunny days. Prevention layers add up.

Try putting a plain moisturizing balm on first and the SPF one over it, the taste gets way less noticeable that way. Staying hydrated also keeps my chapped lips from cracking in the first place, which matters more than I expected.

This is exactly the kind of thing the community is for. Small consistent habits beat any single fix, in my experience.

I felt the same when I started, it does get easier.
