What lip balm works for chapped lips without peeling when you get cold sores?

Every balm I try leaves my lips flaky and peeling within a day or two, and my lips are already sensitive since I deal with cold sores now and then. I want something gentle with SPF that keeps my lips comfortable and supports my usual prevention routine. What has actually worked for you?

Plain petrolatum based balms have been the gentlest for me, no flavors or menthol. I noticed the tingly mint ones were what made my lips peel in the first place.

Look for something simple with SPF 30 since sun exposure is a common trigger for a fever blister flare. A basic mineral sunscreen balm plus staying hydrated made a big difference for my chapped lips.

Anything with lanolin or shea butter works well for me, and I keep my overall routine steady with sleep, water, and lysine rich foods. If a balm stings or tingles when you apply it, that is usually a sign to skip it.

Reflected sun is sneaky, it got me on holiday last year.

Honestly the thing that helped me most was switching to a really plain balm with no menthol or camphor in it, those always made my lips peel worse. I just keep reapplying a boring unscented one all day and my lips finally stopped flaking, even around outbreak time.
