Why do I get huge cold sores so often when my doctor says my immunity is fine?

I am 18 and I feel like I am sick all the time, and whenever I get run down a big fever blister shows up on my lip. My doctor ran bloodwork and said my immunity looks fine, but I keep getting outbreaks along with constantly chapped lips. I already use abreva at the first tingle, but I would love to hear what others do for prevention, like lysine or daily habits that keep outbreaks away.

Really glad you shared this. What has helped me most is treating it as a prevention question rather than a treatment one. Track your own triggers for a few weeks, get ahead of the risky days, and protect the lip barrier before the sun, wind, or a bad night of sleep can set things off.

Sun sets mine off, so wearing a lip balm with spf every single day has been huge, especially since chapped lips always seemed to come right before a fever blister for me. It is such an easy habit that it is worth trying.

I started taking lysine daily and got serious about sleep, and my outbreaks became a lot less frequent. Stress and exhaustion were my biggest triggers, so managing those made the real difference for me.

Normal bloodwork does not always tell the whole story with hsv flare ups, so I kept a simple diary of sleep, stress, and diet to find my patterns. Once I cut back on late nights and stayed hydrated, my lips calmed down a lot, and it might be worth chatting with your doctor about what you notice.

I get this too, my bloodwork always comes back totally normal and yet one stressful week or a sunny weekend and boom, there's a monster on my lip. From what I've read it's less about overall immunity and more about the virus just being really established in some of us, so please don't feel like your body is failing you.

I remember asking my doctor the same thing and feeling so frustrated, but apparently the virus just lives in the nerves and flares up from things like sun or stress no matter how healthy you are otherwise. It helped me a lot to stop blaming my immune system and start noticing my own triggers, you are definitely not alone in this.

The mental side is real, glad someone said it.

I get it, mine come back like clockwork too even though every blood test I've ever had looks perfect, apparently normal immunity doesn't mean much when the virus lives in your nerves and just waits for a trigger like sun or stress. Took me ages to stop blaming myself for it honestly.

Honestly the same thing here, my bloodwork always comes back totally normal but sun, stress, and a bad night of sleep will still set one off for me. I finally stopped thinking of it as an immunity problem and started tracking my triggers instead, which helped way more than any doctor visit did.

Congrats on the good run, that is a real achievement.
