What HSV-1 actually is
A common, lifelong virus that most people carry. Here is the plain version.
2 min readThe short version
HSV-1 is the virus behind most cold sores. It is extremely common, carried by roughly half the adults on the planet, and most people catch it in childhood from an everyday kiss or shared cup.
Once you have it, it settles quietly in a nerve near the base of your skull and stays there. It is not something you get rid of, so the goal is not a cure. The goal is fewer flare ups and calmer lips.
Why it shows up on your lips
When the virus reactivates it travels back down the same nerve to the surface, which is why cold sores tend to appear in the same spot on or near the lips each time.
What you can control
You cannot control that you carry HSV-1, but you can heavily influence how often it wakes up. Reducing triggers, protecting your lips from UV, and supporting your immune baseline all shift the odds in your favour.
