I stick with a plain SPF 30 balm and skip anything with menthol or strong flavor, since those dry my lips out and I get chapped lips fast. Reapplying every couple of hours has been the biggest change for me.
I keep two balms going, one with SPF for daytime and a thick plain one for overnight. I also toss any stick I used during a cold sore so I am not putting it back on healed lips.
For me it was less about the brand and more about staying hydrated and not licking my lips in the wind. A basic unscented balm with zinc oxide has been gentle and easy to find at any drugstore.
Founder here, thank you for opening this up. The pattern I keep coming back to is protection before anything shows: mineral SPF on the lips every morning, sleep protected, wind and cold kept off. Small daily habits move the needle far more than reacting after the fact.
I get so paranoid about sun on my lips after learning that was my big trigger, honestly just finding something with SPF that I'll actually reapply made the biggest difference for me. The stick ones live in every jacket pocket I own now because if it's not within reach I forget it.
I keep a plain zinc based stick with SPF 30 in my jacket pocket and reapply way more often than the label says, especially on ski days, and honestly that habit has helped me more than any fancy ingredient. The sticks feel waxier than the glossy ones but my lips stopped cracking so I got used to it.
Catching the tingle early is everything for me.
Honestly the thing that helped me most was just finding one I'd actually keep in my pocket and reapply every couple hours on the slopes, the fancy ones I forgot at home never did me any good. Reef safe mineral sunscreen types have felt gentler on my lips than the chemical ones, but that might just be me.
Honestly the stick ones with a bit of SPF have been the only thing that keeps my lips from cracking on ski days, I just keep reapplying way more often than the label says and that seems to make the difference for me.
Honestly I stopped chasing the perfect one and just keep a plain SPF stick in every jacket pocket so I actually reapply on the lifts, which mattered way more than the brand. The ones with zinc feel a bit chalky but my lips have been so much happier since I got consistent about it.
