Anyone else get a cold sore after every dentist appointment?

WarmFox72 · 8d ago · 8 upvotes
I had a cleaning last week and sure enough, three days later I felt the tingle on my bottom lip. It happens almost every time they keep my mouth stretched open that long. I mentioned it to my dentist and she just shrugged, so now I dread checkups more for the cold sore than the drill. Does anyone do anything before an appointment to head one off?

Yes and I finally figured out mine was the stress plus having my mouth stretched open under that bright light for an hour. Now I just warn my dentist I'm prone to them and try to book morning appointments when I'm less run down, which has helped a little.

This is exactly the kind of thing the community is for. Small consistent habits beat any single fix, in my experience.

Yes, every single time, and for years I thought I was just unlucky until I realized all that stretching and poking at my mouth was setting it off. Now I just plan on babying my lips for a few days after every appointment and honestly it helps to know I'm not the only one.

Yes, this is me too, I think it's something about my mouth being stretched open that long plus the stress of it all, and I've started warning my hygienist ahead of time so she goes a little gentler on that corner. Not sure it fully helps but at least I feel less blindsided when one shows up two days later.

Yes, every single time, I used to think it was just bad luck until my hygienist mentioned all that stretching and the bright light can set them off. Now I try to warn her at the start so she goes a bit gentler on that corner of my mouth, and honestly it has helped more than I expected.

Yes, every single time, and for years I thought it was just bad luck until my hygienist mentioned how much they stretch your mouth during a cleaning. Now I put a little balm on before I go in and try to tell them to be gentle on the corners, which helps more than I expected.
