Catching the tingle early is the biggest thing for me, I keep a treatment stick in my bag so I am never waiting until the next day to start. The first few hours seem to matter more than anything I do later.
SPF lip balm made a noticeable difference in my summer flare ups, I reapply every couple of hours when I am outside. Sun and wind used to be my most reliable trigger and now they are much less of one.
I focus on the boring stuff, sleep, hydration, and keeping my lips from getting chapped in winter. When I let myself run down for a week or two, that is usually when I notice one showing up.
