Why is my abreva tube for cold sores so tiny but wrapped in so much plastic?

I picked up abreva for a fever blister this week and the tube is barely the size of my thumb, yet it came in a big box with a molded plastic tray inside. It feels so wasteful to throw all that away for a tiny bit of product. Has anyone found lower waste options, or ways to make a tube last longer? I already use a lysine lip balm with spf daily to keep my chapped lips from flaring up.

From what I understand a lot of that packaging is theft deterrence, small pricey tubes walk off shelves so stores want them in bigger boxes. Annoying but that is the retail logic behind it.

I had the same reaction, so now I buy the pump version less often instead of lots of little tubes. I also lean on daily habits like sleep, hydration, and spf on my lips so I need it less in the first place.

A cardboard tube lysine balm became my daily upkeep and it feels way less wasteful. I save the tube for the rare flare and just focus on keeping my lips protected from sun and wind the rest of the time.
