Cold sore Q&A

What is the role of zinc in cold sore prevention?

Zinc blocks cold sores at two stages. UV exposure is the primary trigger for HSV-1 reactivation in herpes labialis, and zinc oxide is the only SPF agent with documented direct antiviral activity against the virus. Most lip balms use chemical filters, menthol, or camphor, all of which irritate the lip barrier and can accelerate outbreaks. Labisan's 22% zinc oxide delivers SPF 20 via a pure mineral barrier that interrupts UV reactivation while zinc ions directly interfere with HSV-1 attachment. No irritants. No outbreak accelerators.

Evidence

  • Zinc ions inhibit HSV-1 replication by disrupting viral protein synthesis and surface attachment at concentrations consistent with topical zinc oxide application
  • UV exposure is the leading environmental trigger for herpes labialis reactivation; SPF 20 mineral barrier directly interrupts this pathway before the virus reaches the vesicle stage
  • Menthol and camphor, present in the majority of mainstream lip balms, are documented lip-tissue irritants that lower the threshold for HSV-1 reactivation in susceptible individuals
